There are a bunch of movies and TV series being released in 2019 that are based on best-selling books. I’m not much of a movie person. For some reason, I can spend 4 hours reading a book, but after just an hour watching a movie, I start to get restless. But there are a handful of upcoming movies (and TV series) I think I can easily muster up the attention span to watch – three of them are based on books I’ve blogged about and three are based on books on my TBR list.

The Woman in the Window

This is an excellent thriller. The main character is a woman who has debilitating agoraphobia. She can’t leave her house without having a huge panic attack, which, of course, plays a vital role in the book’s plot. The movie stars Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Julianne Moore and is supposed to be released in October. You can read my opinion about the book here.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Bernadette goes missing and her 15-year-old daughter is determined to find her. The novel was hilarious, mainly due to the email correspondence that makes up much of the first half of the book. It will be interesting to see how the screen version adapts that aspect. The release date is March and it stars Kate Blanchett, Judy Greer, and Kristen Wiig. My post about the book is here.

The Rosie Project

Genetics professor Don Tillman launches a formal project to find a wife. In the process, he meets Rosie, who wants to meet her biological father. Hilarity and romance ensue. This novel was amazing – funny, heartwarming, and makes you think. The details of the movie are vague, including the cast and the release date. Fingers crossed that it actually happens this year. And now for three movies based on books from my TBR list (I’d better start reading!).

The Nightingale

Kristin Hannah’s much acclaimed novel tells the story of two sisters in war-torn, WWII France. The only reason I haven’t read it yet is because it’s supposed to be a real tear jerker and I am a total wimp. And I might be perpetuating a myth here, because I can’t find a release date or a list of cast members. I’m beginning to realize the movie industry is fraught with uncertainty. And they must have scary nondisclosures because I can’t find any information about this – seems like a crew or cast member would have leaked to one of the entertainment magazines.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark

This bestseller by Michelle McNamara chronicles the journalist’s determined attempt to identify the “Golden State Killer,” who was responsible for 50 rapes and 10 murders in California during the ’70s and 80s. I’ve heard it’s a terrific read. HBO is making a docu-series based on the book. Should be good!

Little Fires Everywhere

A woman and her daughter disrupt an ordered, suburban neighborhood. This book, by Celeste Ng, received a lot of buzz last year. It will be a series on Hulu starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.

Bonus – several classics are also supposed to hit the screen this year:

– The ABC Murders (Agatha Christie) – This will be a miniseries on Amazon, starring John Malkovich as Poirot, an odd choice, but we shall see. Available February 1.
– Catch-22 – a six part series on Hulu.
– Little Women – scheduled for a Christmas release and including Meryl Streep and Emma Watson in the cast.
– The Secret Garden – with Colin Firth.
– Call of the Wild – Christmas release date.
– The Turn of the Screw – directed by Stephen Spielberg
– Native Son – being released at the end of this month (January).
