The Guest List is a highly satisfying suspense novel that takes place during the wedding from hell on a completely inhospitable island off the Irish coast. A cautionary tale about destination weddings? Perhaps! Continue reading

Book Review: Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
Death on the Nile is a Hercule Poirot mystery. The little Belgian sleuth with the big brain and dramatic mustache can’t catch a break – he’s supposed to be retired and on holiday, but murder seems to follow him around. This time, the murder takes place on a Nile riverboat and the victim is a young, wealthy, beautiful newlywed named Linnet Doyle.

Book Review: To the Hilt by Dick Francis
Strong characters, a bit of intrigue and, of course, a horse make Dick Francis’s To the Hilt a good read. Continue reading
Book Review: Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
Case Histories is the first book in Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series. I chose this novel because I was in the mood for a good mystery, plus I recently read Life After Life, also by Kate Atkinson, and liked the author’s writing style. Unfortunately, my craving for a good mystery was not satisfied. Continue reading
Book Review: Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
Maisie Dobbs is the first book in Jacqueline Winspear’s successful Maisie Dobbs mystery series. The series, which recently added book number 15, features a British female sleuth who solves mysteries in the 1920s/1930s. Although this first book had a few rough spots, it was interesting enough to make me want to read the next book in the series to see how things progress. Continue reading
Book Review: Faithful Place by Tana French
Faithful Place is the third installment in Tana French’s highly popular Dublin Murder Squad series. Rich atmosphere, complex characters, and great writing make this a very satisfying mystery. I read it is part of the 12 Months of Reading Goodness challenge. (March’s challenge was to read a book by an Irish author.) Continue reading
Book Review: Dark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly
Dark Sacred Night is the latest novel by bestselling author Michael Connelly. It pairs two of his police detective characters, Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard, to solve the cold case murder of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton. Continue reading
Book Review: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz performs some impressive mental gymnastics in delivering this satisfying whodunit. Magpie Murders is a mystery within a mystery (neither of which I solved!) written in the classic style of Agatha Christie. Continue reading
“Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore”, by Matthew Sullivan
Lydia works at a large, independent bookstore in Denver. She’s extremely compassionate, especially toward the “sad men” who populate the bookstore (if you’ve spent any time at all in an urban Barnes and Noble, you’ll be familiar with this type of customer). One night, one of these “sad men”, Joey, kills himself in the bookstore and leaves behind clues that surprisingly tie him to Lydia’s troubled past. Continue reading
Book Review: Still Life by Louise Penny
Still Life is the first book in Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. She’s now up to Book 13, so this was published awhile ago. Since I typically like to start a series at the beginning, I checked out Still Life, and now I’m pleased to say that I have 12 more books in this wonderful series that I’m looking forward to reading. Continue reading
